Lifting My Gaze Up

There is something grounding about lifting my gaze up. I do not mean up towards the sky (although this is always nice to do as well), but, rather, up from whatever it is I am doing for a brief moment. A moment long enough to refocus on the room around me before resuming once again whatever activity I am working on.

So often I find myself working on the computer, neck craned downwards, eyes locked on the screen for long amounts of time. During these periods, there are brief moments where I become aware of this. In those moments I choose to look up. I change what I am looking at and take in the room around me. I might look at the plants that are in front of me, the patterns in the wood on the table, I even might look a bit more closely at my hands in front of me. How do my hands look? What do the rings I am wearing look like? Or the little knuckle hairs or lines on the back of my hand?

To me, this is a form of mindfulness. I am looking at what is around me and taking it in. I am coming back to the space, to the room and becoming aware of my sitting here, at this moment. I notice details I might pass or not notice at all otherwise.

I also find this small exercise helps to bring a sense of gratitude. I look at the objects around me and in my noticing them I come to appreciate their existence. I appreciate the table, the plants, my hands and realize in this moment, I do not need more.

Then, I usually go back to whatever it was I was doing, but with a fresh perspective, a clean start in a way.

Perhaps when you finish reading this you might consider taking a moment to lift your gaze up and see what you notice.
